BRADFORD CITY 1 TOWN RESERVES 3
A brace from Malvin Kamara (pictured) and a second-half strike from Luke Beckett was enough to give Town their second derby victory in as many evenings as the Reserves overcame their young Bradford counterparts at Valley Parade.
The Terriers looked far more comfortable on the ball than the Bantams on the evening and the win was well deserved. In truth it could have been more, but a mixture of bad luck and bad finishing kept Town down to three.
Town started the game in a 4-3-3 formation; Smithies protected by a back four of (from left to right) Danny Codman, Spencer Harris, Tom Clarke and Danny Racchi. Joe Skarz and skipper Aaron Hardy were playing slightly behind the more advanced Danny Schofield in central midfield, with Lucas Akins and Malvin Kamara starting on the right and left sides of the central Luke Beckett in attack.
The Terriers crafted the first chance of the game inside four minutes after Kamara easily outmuscled left-back Horne in the right corner before crossing to the near post. Beckett's near post run made him a yard of space in front of centre-back Hopkins, but Town's top scorer volleyed the ball over the Bradford crossbar from around ten yards out.
All of the possession football and good play came from Town in the early stages and the next chance fell to the men in Blue and White inside eight minutes; Tom Clarke was disappointed not to make more of his near post header from a right-wing Racchi corner, the ball drifting wide of the near post.
Kamara was lively in the early stages, but he blasted over the bar from inside the area in the 10th minute after some quick passing between Akins, Beckett and Hardy presented him with a shooting opportunity in the right channel.
Bradford's only outlet in the opening quarter of an hour seemed to be right-winger Morgan, who constantly looked to go on the outside of left-back Daniel Codman. However, he was getting no change out of the Academy scholar.
Bradford had their first opportunity in the 17th minute after an error from Joe Skarz; the midfielder dallied on the ball and was robbed in the Town half by big striker Luke Medley, who immediately played strike partner Brown in on goal. However, the diminutive forward was robbed of the ball brilliantly by Alex Smithies as he tried to go around the Town custodian.
The Bantams had suddenly got a foothold in the game and winger Morgan flashed a shot just wide of Smithies' right-hand post two minutes later after controlling a clever flick on the edge of the box by Medley.
Eventually Town started to control proceedings once more and home 'keeper Nick Jordan had to bail his side out in the 25th minute. Aaron Hardy set Malvin Kamara away down the right with a well judged ball over the defence and the shot-stopper did well to come out and tackle the Sierra Leone international as he closed in on the penalty area.
Bradford left-winger Osbourne put his 25-yard left foot drive over and well wide of the Town goal in the 32nd minute but his run in from the wing was positive, but Town deservedly opened the scoring a minute later.
GOAL - Town's first goal started with a clever ball down the channel to find the run of Luke Beckett, who held the ball up well before passing back to the impressive Codman. He squared the ball across the face of the penalty area for Tom Clarke, who tried a shot as the ball rolled across him; instead, his effort rolled into the path of Malvin Kamara, who instinctively hit the ball across the goalkeeper and into the far corner from around fifteen yards out. There was an element of luck in the goal, but it was well deserved.
Codman then tested Jordan's reactions with an over hit cross that almost dropped into the back post two minutes later, but the Bantams' goalkeeper managed to top the ball over the bar. From the resulting corner, the goalkeeper had to push away another Clarke header before the ball was cleared to safety.
Bradford tried to fight back and striker Brown broke through the Town defence to latch onto a Morgan through-ball in the 37th minute; however, Alex Smithies came straight off his line and gave the striker no chance of getting the ball past him, narrowing the angle and forcing Brown into shooting straight at his chest.
Spencer Harris' attempted curler from the edge of the box drifted over the Bradford bar with five minutes of the half remaining but from that dead ball Graham Mitchell and Martyn Booty made a change - swapping Tom Clarke and Aaron Hardy's positions.
GOAL - Malvin Kamara grabbed his second goal of the game in the 41st minute as Town broke with deadly efficiency. Skarz intercepted a Bradford pass in his own half and set Lucas Akins away down the left side, who easily beat right-back Burgess and slid the ball across the goalmouth. The ball evaded Beckett at the near post, but Kamara timed his run perfectly to tap the ball home at the far post.
GOAL - Bradford striker Luke Medley pulled a goal back for his side a minute before the half-time whistle, evading his marker and latching onto a Phelan through-ball before confidently driving the ball past Alex Smithies and into the far corner from the edge of the box.
The Town coaching will have been disappointed at that; the Terriers had been by far the better side and looked far more comfortable on the ball all half, but one lapse in concentration had effectively given the Bantams a lifeline as they entered the interval.
Half-Time: Bradford City 1 Town Reserves 2
Hardy remained at centre-back and Clarke in defensive midfield as the second-half commenced and Tom should have scored within a minute. Malvin Kamara won an early corner on the right side and Racchi's deep delivery presented the younger brother of Nathan with a free header six yards out - but he could only nod the ball wide of the post. It was Clarke's third header from a corner in the game and his audible cry of frustration was understandable.
Scott Phelan's speculative 25-yard drive went straight down the throat of Smithies on the stroke of 52 minutes.
Danny Schofield was then set away down the left side by a clever overhead kick from Lucas Akins a minute later; the maverick midfielder ghosted past right-back Burgess and into the area before placing the ball across the goalkeeper. The ball hit the far post and hit Tom Clarke who was following up before rolling agonisingly wide.
GOAL - Schofield's next foray into the Bradford box proved to be more successful and provided a third Town goal in the 55th minute. He went to the by-line on the left again before pulling the back to Luke Beckett, who slammed the ball into the net from around eight yards out.
SUB - Immediately after the goal, Town made a triple substitution; Kamara, Clarke and Skarz were replaced by Luke Durham, Tom Jackson and Luke Malcher. Jackson moved into centre-back with Hardy returning to central midfield, with Malcher occupying one of the other central midfield berths and Durham taking Kamara's right wing position.
Lucas Akins was denied a goal by a good diving save from the Bradford 'keeper in the 61st minute, but the Terriers were all over their hosts by this point. First-year Academy scholar Durham was lively on the right in only his second reserve team appearance and was getting plenty of very vocal encouragement from the Town bench, whereas Spencer Harris was a very comfortable figure at the back.
Luke Malcher fired a left-foot shot inches wide of the post from 25 yards with 14 minutes remaining after receiving a pass from Danny Schofield.
SUB - Bradford made their first change after 79 minutes, with Richie Banks replacing Luke Medley.
With 8 minutes left, Beckett headed a flat Racchi cross straight at the goalkeeper. A minute later, Scott Phelan's 28-yard free-kick was easily saved by Smithies.
SUB - Luke Dean came on for Leon Osbourne in Bradford's second change in the 86th minute.
Phelan flashed another long range effort well wide with a minute of normal time remaining.
Bradford striker Brown got between the two Town centre backs in added time and was put through on goal, but his scuffed his volley wide in what was the last action point of a convincing win for Town.
