Newby 23, 46, Own Goal 57

It was a story of two halves at the Galpharm Stadium this evening as Town held on for the draw that means progression to the second round of the Pontin's Holidays League Cup. The Terriers dominated the first-half, with Daniel Broadbent scoring a brace and Danny Schofield running the show, but ended up hanging onto the draw after a spirited fight-back from the visitors.

John Dungworth opted for his usual 4-4-2 formation to start the game. With regular Reserve team 'keeper Simon Eastwood missing following an operation on the stress fracture in his foot, Academy goalie Alex Smithies continued between the sticks. He was protected by a back four of, from left to right; Academy scholars Tom Jackson, Leigh Franks (who was making his debut at Reserve-team level for Town), Shane Killock and first-team squad member Danny Racchi.

James Berrett and Mitchell Bailey - now sporting a newly shaved head - formed the central midfield \partnership, with skipper Matthew Young on the right and Danny Schofield on the left. Up front, Town legend Andy Booth was partnered by the under-18 top scorer Daniel Broadbent.

The most notable name on the visiting team-sheet was former Town striker Jon Newby.

Town started very brightly, winning a free-kick right on the edge of the Morecambe box through Broadbent that Schofield bent wide. The tricky wide-man then went on a typically mazy run into the opposition box that forced a corner at the back post as Matthew Young's shot was blocked by left-back Michael Howard.

GOAL - From that corner, Town took the lead. The delivery was deep and narrowly missed the head of Andy Booth at the back post, but Daniel Broadbent picked it up before firing it past the stricken goalkeeper with his right foot to give Town the lead within three minutes.

The away side got a foothold in the game following the goal and possession evened out for the next ten minutes. Alex Smithies had to be alert to tip one over-hit cross away from his back post.

GOAL - Town were looking dangerous from corners and they scored a second through Matthew Young. A deep Danny Racchi delivery - this time from the opposite side of the pitch - found Andy Booth at the back post, who towered above the away defence to knock the ball back across goal. As the ball traveled across goal, the Town skipper reacted quickest to loop the ball over the stranded goalkeeper from around 4 yards.

GOAL - It was 3-0 in the 20th minute, with Daniel Broadbent getting his second goal of the evening - however, the goal could be attributed to the excellent work from Danny Schofield. The maverick winger picked up the ball on the halfway line before beating an opposing midfielder with a clever change of pace and slipping 'Broady' in on goal. The young striker drew the advancing 'keeper before slotting the ball coolly into the left-hand corner.

GOAL - Former Town striker Jon Newby then pulled a goal back straight from the restart; a straight long ball down the centre released the diminutive forward, who expertly rounded a stranded Alex Smithies before placing the ball into the empty net.

Newby then hammered a shot over the bar from the edge of the Town box two minutes later after a pass allowed him to get in behind left-back Tom Jackson and Shane Killock.

Both sides were playing some neat football by this point. Most of Town's good moves involved either Schofield or Broadbent, with the latter miscuing a volley after receiving a pass from Andy Booth when looking for his hat-trick with ten minutes of the half remaining.

Town then took control of the game, but persistence from Morecambe striker Wayne Curtis paid off when he robbed Killock of the ball before laying it off to Paul Lloyd on the edge of the box. Luckily for Town, Smithies made a smart save low to his left to keep the scoreline at 3-1 going into the interval.

Half-Time: Huddersfield Town 3 Morecambe 1

SUB - John Dungworth made one change at half-time; swapping the impressive Danny Schofield with second-year Academy scholar Curtis Roberts. This change saw Roberts play on the right wing, with Matthew Young switching to the left side.

GOAL - Straight from the kick-off, Jon Newby scored his second of the night. A break down the right wing released Paul Lloyd into space, who in turn pulled the ball back across goal for Newby to slam home at the far post as the impressive Leigh Franks slipped.

An inventive corner in the 55th minute saw Mitchell Bailey hit the ball to the edge of the box where James Berrett hit a volley straight at 'keeper Scott Davies.

GOAL - Morecambe then equalised in the 57th minute through a Leigh Franks own goal. The left-winger Jamie Burns got free down the Town right before trying to pull a ball back from the byline towards a teammate. Unfortunately, Franks stuck a leg out and diverted it past Alex Smithies, despite a valiant attempt from the young goalie.

Smithies did make an excellent save in the 64th minute to deny bustling striker Curtis after he hit a snapshot from the edge of the box after rolling Killock.

Danny Racchi then saw an excellent 20-yard free-kick go narrowly wide in the 66th minute after James Berrett had been fouled by Simon Grand.

SUB - Stephen Brook then replaced Andy Booth in the same minute, meaning that Matthew Young moved into a position just behind the striker with Brook occupying the left wing.

Newby then picked up a loose Danny Racchi pass in the 71st minute before stinging Smithies' palms with a shot - Shane Killock clearing the rebound ahead of striker Curtis.

Curtis missed a chance to win the game for the away side with ten minutes left after Killock fell over while the last man and in possession, hammering the ball wide of Smithies' left-hand post when it was easier to score. The jeers from those watching were audible, the imposing striker having made himself unpopular with the physical nature of his play throughout the game.

Smithies then pulled off a tremendous reaction save at his near post after Curtis got on the end of a Lloyd corner, tipping the ball over his bar as the game ended 3-3.
