TERNENT: "THE PLAYERS DID WELL"
htafc.com caught up with Town boss Stan Ternent following the 0-0 draw at Colchester United's new Weston Homes Community Stadium and he explained that he was fairly happy with the performance.
"I think that given the circumstances - meaning that it's a new Stadium, their first competitive home game and we are the proverbial 'lambs to the slaughter' - I thought the players did really, really well," Stan explained.
"We had the better chances in the game and I thought we may have been given a penalty.
"The referee has admitted that the ball hit the guy's arm, but said it wasn't intentional - but it did stop it going in the net. Never mind; I'm happy with the clean sheet, which is our second in the three games we have played. We are still undefeated and good teams are built on firm foundations. We created numerous scoring opportunities today and sooner or later they will go in for us."
One chance that could have given Town all three points fell to Andy Booth right at the death, but the legendary striker could not wrap his foot around the ball.
"Andy couldn't get his shot away - he was falling back and he couldn't make a firm enough contact. If he had from that range, it would have gone in. All in all, I thought the players acquitted themselves very well, worked extremely hard and kept a decent shape and balance about themselves. We got a little tired towards the end but we will get better and I'll keep trying to get more players with, which I'm on with. "
Ternent talked about striker Danny Cadamarteri after the game, whose pace was a constant menace to the Colchester defence.
Stan explained: "Danny is getting there, but just needs a little bit more quality in his end product. We don't just need that from Danny, but from most of them. They will improve and we're doing ok at the moment. We would have obviously liked to have won both League games and in reflection we've got two points from a possible six, but we are undefeated."
New signing Tom Denton travelled with the squad for the game, but the Gaffer explained that he was never going to play.
"Tom was never going to feature - we've brought him down to get in the swing of things and to get a feel of how we prepare for games. His medical would have needed to be complete by 12pm yesterday and everything is ok, but that wasn't finished until 4pm so it was never my intention to involve him in the match.
"I'm sure he has enjoyed the experience as he's a Huddersfield lad - a season ticket holder in fact. I've signed potential and it will take time, but he has the attributes and in fairness to Tom, he would have got a lot more money going to Crystal Palace or Blackburn Rovers than I could offer him. I'm delighted to have him."
Now that Denton has joined, should Town fans expect any more signings before the August transfer window closes?
"They'll be one early next week!"
