GAME WITH GUNNERS FOR CENTENARY SHOWPIECE
Huddersfield Town are delighted to confirm that they have secured a game with European and Premiership giants Arsenal for the Club's centenary on Wednesday 6th August, kick-off 7pm.
The game, which will form the show-piece of Huddersfield Town's Centenary celebrations in 2008, was rubber stamped this week after talks between the Arsenal board of directors and Town Vice-Chairman Andrew Watson.
One of the most innovative and astute managers of all time, Chapman was at the helm during the most successful periods in Huddersfield's and Arsenal's history. He achieved unparalleled success with Town, guiding them to the FA Cup trophy in 1922 and then to two of their three consecutive League titles in 1924 and 1925. They were the first Club to be crowned champions three times in a row.
In 1925 he moved to London where he achieved more success with Arsenal leading the Gunners to their first ever trophy in 1930. Interestingly, they beat Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup Final. In 1931, Arsenal were champions for the first time and the following year helped secure Huddersfield Town's record crowd at Leeds Road, 67,037 in the 6th round of the FA Cup. Between 1933 and 1935 Arsenal won a hat-trick of league titles. Sadly Chapman died in the middle of the run, but by that time he had already attained legendary status both at Highbury and at Leeds Road.
To celebrate the success Chapman achieved at both Clubs, Arsenal will be presenting Huddersfield Town with a 100th Birthday present, a bust of the legendary manager, which will be an exact replica of Arsenal's bust which is housed in the famous marble hallway at Highbury.
Huddersfield Town chairman Ken Davy said: "Arsenal are one of the world's most respected Clubs and their strong historical links with Huddersfield Town made them the ideal choice for a Centenary fixture. Naturally, we are delighted to have secured this prestigious fixture against such a renowned Club.
"The idea to play Arsenal came some time ago from Vice-Chairman Andrew Watson. He, along with media manager Alisdair Straughan, has put a great deal of work into securing this fixture and formulating the plan for the Centenary of which this game will be the highlight."
Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood said: "Herbert Chapman is a true Arsenal legend and we feel it is entirely appropriate that we celebrate his role with us and football in general by participating in this match with Huddersfield Town.
"We are delighted to be playing a part in Huddersfield's centenary and having the opportunity to remind ourselves of what an inspirational and successful manager Herbert Chapman was for both clubs."
